This blog provides information for managers on how to build well-managed organizations. A well-managed organization is a wonderful thing: it efficiently produces excellent results and is also a great place to work.
A well-managed organization might be an entire company or it might be a single department within a company. This blog is for managers at all levels: company owners, CEOs, presidents, vice-presidents, directors, managers, supervisors, and team leaders.
Well-managed organizations tend to be successful and profitable, so building one will give you a great career as a manager. It will also give your employees what matters most to them:
- A good boss to work for
- Good co-employees to work with
- The fulfillment of being part of a competent and successful team pursuing a shared mission
- The opportunity to grow professionally and personally
- The pride of producing great work and meeting high standards
- The ability to go to work with a smile and enjoy the work day
- The absence of nastiness, cynicism, selfishness, whining, laziness, and pessimism
- The presence of creativity, curiosity, ambition, generosity, and good humor
This is quite different from trying to bribe employees into being productive and happy with perks like concierge services or a volleyball court. For one thing, it works better because it produces deep satisfaction and true loyalty. For another thing, it’s free. You don’t need a bigger budget to do it, you just need knowledge. Which you can get (and contribute) at this blog for no charge.
Folks, this is a mission we really need to pursue. Millions of people in this country are trapped in dysfunctional organizations, working for crappy bosses and surrounded by toxic co-workers. Let’s pool our collective wisdom and become the best managers we can be. If we each make our own little corner of the world a better place – a well-managed place – we will have done our part.
This blog is not intended to be a comprehensive "everything you need to know about managing" resource. That would be too broad to be useful. Instead it will focus on a few key areas that I believe are critical to running a well-managed organization, such as selectivity and building a strong culture. I’ll also be developing the concept of a "Paladin Manager," which is a model for understanding and striving to attain the traits of an ideal manager. We can also share with each other the handy tips and insights we’ve gained in our work as managers, which could be of particular value to readers who are new to management.
There are already a number of blogs that comment on the latest books and articles about management and leadership, so we won’t be doing much of that here. I’m a working manager. In my posts I’ll draw on my own experiences and share the ideas and techniques that have worked well for me. I invite you to share the lessons you have learned by adding your comments. Together we can create a practical resource for managerial excellence.
And maybe make the world a little better place while we’re at it!
